Is oral semaglutide FDA-approved?
FDA-approved as Rybelsus (2019, type 2 diabetes) and as the Wegovy pill (December 2025, weight management and heart risk). The labels say: take it in the morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 oz of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other pills.
Overview
The same GLP-1 medicine as the Ozempic and Wegovy shots, made into a tablet with an absorption helper (SNAC). Less than 1% of each tablet reaches the blood, which is why a pill holds far more semaglutide than a shot does. Levels on the pill also vary more from person to person. In the 64-week trial behind the Wegovy pill's approval (OASIS 4), adults with obesity or overweight lost about 14% of their body weight on average, versus about 2% on placebo.
How it works
It switches on GLP-1 receptors in the pancreas, gut and brain, like the shots: more insulin when blood sugar is high, a slower stomach and quieter hunger. The tablet dissolves in the stomach, so food, drinks or other pills taken too soon block most of the dose from getting in.
How long does oral semaglutide stay in the body?
About 7 days, like the shots, so daily pills build to a steady level over 4 to 5 weeks. Levels peak about an hour after each tablet.
What it's studied for
- Weight management
- Type 2 diabetes blood sugar control
- Heart attack and stroke risk
Reported side effects
- Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and stomach pain, mostly when the dose goes up
- Gallbladder problems and pancreatitis (rare)
- Low blood sugar when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas
- Boxed warning: thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents. Not for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2.
How should oral semaglutide be stored?
Room temperature, in the original bottle or blister pack to keep moisture out.
